How the return-to-duty process works
- Evaluation by a SAP β a qualified Substance Abuse Professional evaluates you and prescribes education and/or treatment.
- Complete the SAP's program β you finish what the SAP requires.
- Follow-up evaluation β the SAP confirms you've complied and are ready.
- Return-to-duty test β a directly observed DOT test that must be negative before you resume safety-sensitive duties.
- Follow-up testing plan β the SAP sets a schedule of at least 6 unannounced tests in the first 12 months (and possibly for up to 5 years).
We perform the return-to-duty and follow-up testing exactly as the SAP directs, with directly observed collections as DOT requires, and keep the records straight so your Clearinghouse status updates properly.
Clearinghouse & recordkeeping
For FMCSA drivers, your violation and return-to-duty progress are tracked in the DOT Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. We keep your testing aligned with the SAP's follow-up plan so nothing stalls your reinstatement.
