How the return-to-duty process works

  1. Evaluation by a SAP — a qualified Substance Abuse Professional evaluates you and prescribes education and/or treatment.
  2. Complete the SAP's program — you finish what the SAP requires.
  3. Follow-up evaluation — the SAP confirms you've complied and are ready.
  4. Return-to-duty test — a directly observed DOT test that must be negative before you resume safety-sensitive duties.
  5. Follow-up testing plan — the SAP sets a schedule of at least 6 unannounced tests in the first 12 months (and possibly for up to 5 years).

What is a return-to-duty (RTD) test?

It's a directly observed DOT drug and/or alcohol test that a driver must pass — after completing the SAP process — before returning to safety-sensitive work following a violation.

How many follow-up tests will I need?

The SAP sets your plan: a minimum of 6 unannounced tests in the first 12 months, and the program can extend up to 5 years depending on your evaluation.

Do you provide the SAP evaluation?

The SAP evaluation is done by a qualified Substance Abuse Professional. We handle the return-to-duty and follow-up testing and coordinate with your SAP; we can also help you find one.

Why does the RTD test have to be observed?

DOT requires return-to-duty and follow-up tests to be directly observed collections to ensure integrity during the reinstatement period.
